Hey everyone,
I have lots of rye in my patch and want to turn it under to start decomp. I plan on planting in the patch mid Jan.
Will there be a problem with such fresh rye being tilled under before it has had a chance to fully decomp?

You will be better off cutting it, letting it dry, then turning it in if possible. Time is an issue. If you turn it in planting 2 weeks later is norm.

Ben..........You have a month for the cover to settle into the system by tilling now. I would till now. Your weather and the time left to planting will give you a dandy start.

cut it down where your going to plant. If to think mow it agin then till it under still to think rake some of the rye off. maybe a 10 foot circle. Then till the rest in later maybe a week after you start you plants. go in stages remember it takes a month or so before you plant will even start running, I double dig the cover crop in stages a couple feet every day and in 6 weeks when your plant is really putting on the lenght you have the hole patch spaded up.. best of luck ben....mark

Hi Ben......I know the size of your patch....unlike my fellow posters. I'd use a "weed wacker" to cut it as low as possible, then rototill it into the soil on Christmas Day. By keeping your soil moist, it will help the cover crop break down.
