I know what it means to me! But whats it mean to others. This is all winter talk, and i can take good , and not good reponces. For me it's one of many learning tools i use, i think it's one of the basic foundations of this GREAT site, things have changed somewhat from starting in 99, but i think the true foundations are still here. I have been reading the site since it's inception, but only started posting for 2 years. Somtimes not the best posts, so dont attack OK! Also there are others, that want to know the samething so it's not just my post.

I started posting some years ago when I was looking to buy seeds. LOL I learned pretty fast to never offer to buy seeds.
Then I saw the wrong rate posted for Sevin which led to the eventual disclosure of what I do for a living.

By Posting it allows other growers to get to know you better. What your growing practices are, how big of an area you have. Sometimes when we reply to posts, we come off wrong or our message is recieved in not the manner it was intended. Some of us just offend others and don't even have to try. It is the growers that we help that matters. I do not believe 1st year growers would be able to grow 1175 lb pumpkins with out this networking.

Another good reason to keep a journal is to remember and hopefully learn from your own mistakes. It's amazing how much we forget over the winter and don't even realize it. Then, I know I sometimes repeat the same mistakes. So, write it down, and review it.
I keep my journal "online" because it's more fun and I also get worthwhile feedback from others.

Currently the front page of the site is really ugly. I'm working on a redesign.

Diary? I use as way documenting my gardening records. I often refer back to the many pages I've acquired over the last few years. Just today I went back into my 2005 diary to look and see if I had kept pictures of a 1016 seed that eventually went double vine on me. This also a way for my friends and family to keep up to date with the events here at my home. Several of my relatives follow my diary entries.
Posting, There is no better way of getting to the bottom of a question quickly. All the research in the world is only as good as the acceptance you can gain from networking with your counterparts. Lending a helping hand to others. When I started out five years ago so many here assisted my development. The BP site has made a difference from in me from a 200 pound nobody into a fellow that grows fruit over 1,000 pounds. Steve is a great example of this he has raised the bar and helped all of us to elevate our game.
Enjoyment. I simply enjoy anything and everything about this hobby. From my backyard to my club to my weigh off to my GPC opportunity it is hard to describe how hooked you can become into this realm.

"i think it's one of the basic foundations of this GREAT site."
Here. Here.
I've always considered it my greatest learning tool for growing Giant Pumpkins.
The diary section here inspired me to keep an online log of my pumpkin gardens from my first year on. As previously stated, I also find myself reviewing the previous year from time to time and using it as a reference. Too bad I kept it at another site which is no longer live. lesson learned.
I have gotten several ideas and learned new things from others diaries. Sometimes a pic just adds so much to the description. I also just Love watching all your pumpkins grow and gives me something to compare my progress to. I wish many of the record holders here could find more time to keep a detailed diary for all who wish to learn from to be able to reference.
This year I will try to do the best I can and will be keeping a diary both here and on my gardening forums website.
Thank You!!! to everyone who keeps great, detailed journals in the Dairy section!!
I can't wait for the 2007 Diaries to be available, I've already started mine.

I use my diary to express myself and to refer back to for later use.
I post messages in order to gain and give info quickly and because it is the only place where people want to talk about pumpkins in December.

lol erin also... Yes, you really should try it sometime. Also, try to work some humor into your diary. People can relate to someone who views this hobby with a sense of humor. That's my tip for the day. ;-)

I keep a diary to keep me busy enough to stay out of the garden when I am done with it. We all have a tendency to over prune, over water, over just about everything we do. I feel I am my plants worst enemy when it comes down to too much TLC. I also like to look back to see the changes in the lawn. My patch has grown from little, to large with no lawn left. LOL
I also like to look back at the last couple of years and see how my kids have grown. In my opinion the diary section is one of the most important parts of this great site.
Not only does it share gardening process with those who are willing to share, but also gives a chance to peek into the lives of other growers and cheer for their accomplishments and to morn in their defeats.
We talk about family and community. The diary section in my mind strengthens that bond. John

so in the end, i can look at the process unfold throughout the year. and compare one year to the previous, etc.
plus nothing is cooler than meeting someone at a weighoff / niagra / wherever who knows who you are because of your diary.

Looks like erin and I will be starting diary #101 next year,,
and yes shannon that 1175, 1046,and 1023 came from alot of hard work and all the folks that helped along the way,,,this networking of growers is the key to success
Thanks again to all that shared info and ideas I only hope that over time I can do the same for others.

Hi to all and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. A log of everything you do is important. History would not be without recording. Mistakes and errors are bound to reoccur if we don't learn from our past.
We wish all a happy fruitfull 2007! Cheers!
