Glad you have bears (melon damage aside) because here we are allowed to shoot bears and from what I've seen I think they are almost extinct despite the state claiming there are many. Government on both ends of the spectrum is incompetent and I dont trust what they say. Value what you have, even the bears... they belong to God too.

Extinct? That is laughable! Just search on bears in CT. I see people reporting bear sightings everyday.

I dont live in CT. I'm talking about nearly extinct where I live. Maybe extinct is the wrong word. But I live in the mountains, smack in the middle of their prime habitat, but have never seen a bear. Furthermore we set beehives in many places and the hives dont get attacked... Just one time. So to me that means there is likely only one bear in the whole area. And it may have gotten shot as well.
Consider that one lone bear in a populated area could generate 100 bear sightings... it doesnt mean there are 100 bears.
People think, like with the passenger pigeon, that these things can never go away...
Anyhow... I'm going against the grain here as I often do. Apologies :)

I dont want to beat a dead horse but there is an interesting mix of money and politics here which is that I live in a blue state but even the democrats cant step on the toes of the timber lobby/ industry. They are the ones who want the bears dead. Because they damaged a few of their trees, (somewhere, once upon a time.) The concerns of the bleeding heart liberals are fickle and they are so engrossed with social equality issues that they've largely given up being advocates for environmental justice. But clearing the forests of bears, which is THEIR habitat, using hounds, killing multiple bears basically as contract hunters for the timber companies... it is wrong. It just is.
Well, we can never assume that some bureaucrat or lobbyist will sacrifice their own job in order to see the bigger picture.
Forgive the lengthy rant. Best wishes with the melons.
...The beekeepers would hang bacon on the fence. Sucks for the bears but... maybe slightly better than getting shot.

The issue we have here in CT is the bears have little to no fear of people. We have had several people, dogs and livestock attacked by black bears in the past few years. However, despite the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection recommending a limited bear hunting season, our liberal democrats won't allow it. A bear hunting season will reinstate the fear of humans in the bears, not wipe them out. I suspect we will not have a bear hunting season until someone gets killed. That is unfortunate because it does not have to be that way. The future blood of some kid is on their hands.

Im sure they can be a pest or even a danger. I am more afraid of cougars personally. I think there have been more couger -> human than black bear -> human tragedies. Glad for my kids sake that I dont live right at the edge of the forest. Sorry to pollute your diary with my extensive opinions bigmoon!

I have a solution, we live trap em and send out to Washington! I will contract an eighteen wheeler truck driver and we can do dozens at a time. (I would hate to be the poor guy that has to feed them!) LOL. On the return trip back here you guys could live trap some bigfoot, and ship them this way. It might help our non existent tourist industry.

Sounds good. But if you say to people 'come see the monsters from Washington', they may assume you mean D.C.
