When I set up the 150 sf patch this year I decided to start the plant in a corner and run the main in a reverse "S" pattern. It's worked out pretty well. If I ran the vine straight down the middle we might not have a pumpkin growing on the main vine at all. A straight 17' to 18' might not be long enough. With the colder weather this spring, we'd have had fewer chances for sure. With the reverse "S" it added an extra 8' or 9' (or more) of main vine in my patch. The photo shows the pattern I used.
