The length of day today here in Eugene, Oregon is 15 hours and 19 minutes. On June 21, the longest day of the year, we will have 15 hours and 30 minutes of daylight. By pollinating 10 days before the longest day, you get 10 more days which basically have the same amount of sunlight as the 10 days immediately following June 21. If you make the assumption that your fruit will grow for approximately 100 days, and then if you replace the 10 shortest days of growth at the end of the season with these 10 longest days, you end up with an extra 33 hours of daylight if you live on the 44th parallel like I do. That is like adding 3 more 11 hour days for a plant to undergo photosynthesis. At the end of September our days have about 11.5 hours of sunlight. A June 11 pollination gives me 3 percent more growing time. An additional 3 percent on a 2200 pound pumpkin is 66 pounds. On a 2500 pound pumpkin it is 75 pounds. I will enthusiastically take it!
