The story of "little boy"
Last November while still in spots, little boy was preyed upon by a pair of coyotes. He only survived by dragging himself into the backyard and laying down in the cover crop of the pumpkin patch. The doe was reluctant to come that close to the house and nurse him so Shawna and I took it upon ourselves to make sure he had a chance. After a few days he was getting up and moving but never far from the house. The doe also eased tension and began coming to the edge of the yard to nurse him. He looked like a pitbull that lost a bad fight! Bloody, torn ears, gash in neck, puncture holes everywhere, and a bad limp. This picture is on January 18th 2026 after his wounds healed over. In the background, is his mother and two aunts. He was weened at this point and looking for dinner- waiting for dinner. Besides snacks, he was given natural forage like apple tree trimming, hemlock branches, anything I could think of to keep him close to the house and safe from the dogs.
You never know what might grow from a giant pumpkin patch.
