As I am getting bored too easily when watching a single cover crop grow, I am going with a multi-stage cover crop this year. Strip A: The flowers that I have shown previously, it is amazing to see how tall the zinnias and tagetes are growing when competing for room and light. The sunflowers are done, and today I discovered some birds picking some sunflower seeds, and a cat sitting under the canopy, trying to pick some birds. Strip B: This is where there were the potatoes, I picked them end of August, and then I added heaps of compost and started the oil radish cover crop. Strip C: This is where there were the tomato plants, giant butternut and the places of the huts with the AGs inside. Have added a good load of horn chips and sown oil radish here as well (in the last third of September). Strip D: Prepared lately, have put in some sunflower seeds and buckwheat seeds (just in case there will be good weather for the next few days, so there can be some plants that develop some decent roots soon just before they will die of frost) and have sown poppy and corn flower here, so this will be a flower strip in May and beginning of June next year. Strip E: This is the part where there had been the plant sites this year. Now there is rye, and in spring (beginning of April) I will replace the rye by a mustard cover crop there (for April/May/beginning of June). Strips A,B,C will be the area where there will be the plant sites next year, the plants will reach strip D in June (when it is time to remove the poppy and corn flower stuff before they will go to seed) and strip E in July (when the mowed and tilled mustard cover crop will have done some good things to the soil there).
