Use one made for lifting or at least industrial grade. I used a basic camping tarp for just a 400 pounder that was folded over multiple times and it tore through.

The HandleZ are what makeZ it so precious... hard to hang onto a fist full of canvas... but reinforced handles... I have even lifted with a hook without tearing.

I have some 2" nylon strap to make the handles from, will probably go for 10?
will also get heavy duty canvas for sure, don't want an accident after 3 years trying,,,,
