You have plenty of time down there for a mustard crop and then put it into a winter mix of rye, vetch, and peas. That's what I've done before, anyway.

I'm sorry Luke. There is some evidence that a winter cover crop of hairy vetch can suppress fusarium so I would definitely do that after a mustard/solarization run.

I hate that, it was a good color too. For disease, Kodiak mustard, let it grow than mow it down and till it in, hose down the area when you're done. Clear plastic is also great but you have to keep it sealed tight, burry all the edges to bake the soil, just make sure you remove it before the plastic gets too brittle or you have a real mess on your hands...

Thanks everyone. My kids are at camp all week so I am leaving in patch growing until they get home Saturday.

It is still packing on inches daily and prob would have been a PB... very depressing to see it in back daily.

Corn or sorghum even? I dont know your climate. You can maybe get a few different cover crops in between now and spring, at least two, I would think. Everything that promotes the good guys in the soil should help. Dave Stelts might say to cover with leaf mulch. I wonder if mustard should be the first, or last, or only thing.

I'm probably getting too far over a ledge here, but corn or sorghum would puts the most carbon into the soil. And if compost was added at the same time it could begin to break down too. Well, I'm being silly. Thinking too much.
