It's normal for the crack to be vertical because there is compression force going down and extension force from side to side. So the BER cracks are usually vertical. Doesnt look like foul play to me. DAY 40-55 is when they are especially vulnerable.

Scan it for internal cracks when you open it up... May give you a better understanding of what happened.

It's a split sorry, that whole area around the blossom end was vulnerable. They generally split in 3 areas. Blossom end which is most frequent, stem end and between 2 ribs on a pumpkin. Always frustrating and not much one can do.

Thanks, I have had BES, but is that normal to be a couple inches to the left of the blossom nub? I have never seen that, usually dead center.

I would feel better knowing its just a BES, but off-center like that is throwing me off.

It's rare, but I've seen that happen before. I'd guess that well under 5% of blossom end splits are "off center" like that.

Not normal like Andy said, guess what I'm thinking that area was weak, compression weight etc. while whole pumpkin is rapidly expanding in all directions, kind of like ketchup alluded to. Seeded many sound giants and at times had ones with their their blossom end pushing in quite a lot and the sides not that thick! Like wow amazed some never split just luck of the draw.
