10. Make a Plan in the Winter and Follow It During the Season
As we enter the “off-season” it is not really a season free of pumpkin growing, just the tasks are different. While you may not be actively growing this is the time to put the time into refining what worked and what needs to be improved on for next year. You only get one growing season so you need to make the most of it.
The most efficient method during the growing season is to have a plan and creating a plan in season is not recommended. Refining the plan in-season is often needed, but the time-consuming task of creating the plan should be done in the off-season. This allows you to focus on the details and develop something that you can have confidence in.
Once you have a plan when the business of the season begins you will have something reliable to fall back on. The basis for the plan should come from your notes from last growing season with key items such as when the first Cucumber beetle was seen to when you may have seen a nutrient issue are al good data points that allow for increased odds of prevention to occur the following year.
Each grower may have their own unique method and process, but the main goal is the same… Make a plan and refer back to it during the growing season to help stay ahead of issues.
